In Germany, renewable energies have increasingly become an important economic and social factor. Today, Germany is a global leader in both renewable energies as well as environmental technologies.
By the end of 2011, the use of renewable energies in Germany prevented the release of about 130 million tons of climate-damaging CO2. The share of renewable energies of the electric power consumption in Germany was 20 percent with wind, bioenergy and photovoltaics being the most dominant sources.
