Rise in Recognition of Foreign Earned Qualifications

In 2014, there were more professional qualifications acquired abroad recognized by German authorities. According to the Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, from a total of 19,806 submitted applications, 13,248 professions obtained in a foreign country were approved as fully or partially equivalent to the same qualifications achieved in Germany. The approved applications were recognized in accordance with the Professional Qualifications Assessment Act (BQFG).

As in 2013, recognitions in the health professions were particularly high. From the 19,806 applications, 14,895 were for recognition in these professions, including 6,807 for physicians, 5,352 for nurses and health care professionals as well as 681 for physical therapists.

A total of 10,293 of the submitted applications for recognition came from the European Union and approximately 5,016 from the rest of Europe. From countries outside of Europe around 4,497 procedures were submitted, including 2,667 solicitations from Asia.

In 2014, most applications came from people with qualifications obtained in Poland (1,857), followed by Rumania (1,740) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (1,098).
